- This position is a highly responsible technical research support position at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with field and laboratory research on songbirds. Responsibilities also include performing routine maintenance for research equipment, assisting with ongoing research activities conducted by graduate students and the supervisor, maintaining current training and certification status for conducting research on songbirds at SREL, and providing assistance with other research-related activities as requested by the supervisor. This position will last from 05/15/23 to 09/1/23. Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis starting immediately. Specific Job Duties: 1) Conducts field and laboratory research involving investigation of heavy metals and radionuclides found in songbirds at SRS. Specific tasks include conducting mist net captures, drawing blood, and following safety protocols in radiological control areas. 2) Provides assistance as needed with other ongoing research activities 3) Advises and provides guidance to faculty, staff, and students in ornithology as a subject matter expert 4) Provides information as required for all chemical, radiological, field equipment, and/or other inventories as requested by SREL safety, property accounting, or similar staff with reporting requirements to DOE and/or UGA 5) Serves as a good steward for all facilities, equipment, vehicles, and other research infrastructure placed in his/her control on behalf of SREL/UGA/DOE
- Qualifications
- 1) Strong academic credentials in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resources management, or related field. 2) Experience conducting ecological field work, including ornithological work, is strongly preferred. Must be willing to work in hot, humid conditions. 3) Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail. 4) Highly motivated. 5) Demonstrated excellence in communication.
