DUTIES: This position combines labor and technical functions into all phases of fish culture.
Assist hatchery staff in the daily care and rearing of a variety of fish species that will be stocked into Indiana’s public waters. The majority of this position’s time will be spent working with the day-to-day intensive rearing responsibilities for the Indiana muskellunge fingerling program. Duties can include feeding fish, measuring growth, observing behavior of juvenile fish, daily cleaning of rearing units, harvesting production ponds, sorting and enumerating fish prior to stocking, and stocking of fish throughout Indiana’s public waters. Daily data is collected and entered into spreadsheets that calculate growth and adjust feed amounts. Assist with weekend fish production work and facility cleaning. This position may also be involved in off-site broodstock collection processes, and may be requested to assist at the Indiana State Fair in early August.
This position is also routinely involved in property maintenance needs as needed which may include; grounds landscaping (push mowing and tractor mowing, weed eating, brush pick-up, etc.), sweeping parking lot areas, picking up trash, cleaning restrooms, and other duties as required.
Job requirements include being able to routinely lift weights of 50 pounds and occasionally weights in excess of 50 pounds, ability to work independently when needed and properly instructed as well as with a team when necessary, ability to follow written and oral instructions, communicate clearly, and be able to get along with supervisors and fellow employees. Must be able to work outdoors in hot or cold weather extremes for several hours at a time.
COMPENSATION: $10.54/Hour; subject to change- plus Housing (1 room efficiency) is on-site in the fish production building and is expected to be used for this position. Work schedule is 5 days/week, 7.5 hours/day (plus 1/2 hour unpaid lunch break), (7 AM to 3 PM Eastern Time) weekends required, with two days off during the week. Acceptance of housing on-site is required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to upper class college students, or recent graduates enrolled in a fisheries curriculum and having completed courses in ecology, fisheries, limnology, and/or aquatic sciences.
