- Description
- SEASONAL LYNX FIELD TECHNICIAN needed for winter live-trapping and GPS collaring for the Home Range Wildlife Research Lynx and Wildfire Project. Home Range is a wildlife research non-profit located in the North Cascades of Washington where one of the few Canada lynx populations exist in the Lower 48. Our research is focused on learning how lynx are using their fire-transformed landscape. The past 20 years have seen a dramatic increase in wildfires and managers need information on how lynx are now using the available habitats in the North Cascades. We are looking for someone to join our lynx trapping and collaring team in a position that will include 1) snowmobile travel in deep snow, mountainous terrain 2) setting, maintaining, and checking box traps, and 3) assisting with lynx captures. Lynx are state-endangered in Washington and so capturing lynx is a challenge in our study area. This work takes persistence and is physically challenging as it requires spending all day in deep snow areas with temperatures as low as -15F and snowmobiling as our primary mode of travel. The position begins January 2nd and runs to March 31st.
- Qualifications
- Applicants must be able spend all day in cold, snowy winter conditions, be physically able to meet the demands of the job including: snowshoeing in deep snow and through challenge terrain; shovel and move wet, heavy snow; maneuver large snow machines; lift and move box traps. Additionally, MUST have experience with one or more of the following: 1) snowmobiling, 2) box trapping mammals, and/or 3) assisting with handling chemically immobilized animals. Mechanical skills, First Aid certifications, and experience with mammal track and sign interpretation, radio telemetry, and data management skills are a plus. We are looking for someone with self-motivation, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude even on long, cold days, and great attention to detail. Must work well on a small team. Duties outside the field will include trap and gear maintenance, data entry and management, and bait collection and prepping (roadkill deer). Compensation is $16.00/hour and housing is provided. To apply: Email a current CV, phone numbers for three references, and a cover letter to carmen@homerange.org. Applications will be accepted through November 1st 2023.
