Description
A graduate research assistantship (M.S.) is available within the SDSU Department of Animal Sciences evaluating the impact of translocations on bison production and parasitology. The primary objective of this study is to 1) Gather data on bison translocations to determine the impact of translocations across environmental gradients, 2) Develop models to predict asymptotic body mass and average daily gain to translocating bison to and from ecological regions across the continent; and 3) characterize disease prevalence in bison herds to improve our understanding of environmental variables influencing disease risk to inform risk analyses for translocation. This project will provide critical information to determine the impact of translocation on animal health across environmental gradients and develop tools to help producers mitigate the effects of translocation on bison health. The student will be part of an inter-disciplinary team and will have opportunities for both collaboration with other graduate students and faculty and professional development.
