Description
The graduate student selected will conduct research on the effects of prescribed burning on butterfly communities in coastal southern Texas. Project goals include determining changes in butterfly and larvae in native rangelands brought about by burning in either winter or summer. The successful candidate will pursue a M.S. degree in Range & Wildlife Management with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute and Dept. of Animal, Rangeland, and Wildlife Sciences, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Additional work expectations include assisting with other projects; assisting with prescribed burning; occasional help preparing, teaching, and grading classes or labs; and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
B.S. in entomology, range ecology, plant ecology, or closely related field. A strong work ethic, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and as a productive member of a research team, and the ability and willingness to work under adverse field conditions (extreme heat and humidity, ticks, mosquitoes, snakes, etc.) are essential. Student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and competitive GRE scores. Preferred: Background or interest in butterfly and larvae identification, plant identification, GIS/GPS skills, experience surveying vegetation, basic field ecology.
