JOB SUMMARY: Provides environmental education with an emphasis on marine science, including aquaponics and aquaculture. Audience K-12 and adults. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Establishes, plans and delivers student programming throughout the year including curriculum/lessons aligned to Next Generation Science Standards for alternative and traditional learners within the traditional school year calendar • Delivers activities to promote character development and team building skills in students • Utilizes experiential instructional designs that provide students the opportunity to observe, question, investigate and problem solve • Modifies teaching methods or materials to accommodate various student abilities and learning styles • Instructs students individually and in groups both at the Herring Gut Learning Center (HGLC) facility and within the public school or community setting • Utilizes technology as appropriate for preparation and student learning experiences • Provides an environment of positive behavioral supports for all students • Communicates with home school staff as appropriate regarding needs and progress of students • Selects, stores, inventories and maintains classroom equipment materials and supplies • Participates in the operation and maintenance of salt and freshwater hatchery labs, aquaponic greenhouse and salt water tanks • Attends, collaborates and presents at professional meetings, conferences and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence • Collaboratively prepares and provides professional learning events for educators and interested parties • Assists in recruitment of new participants in any of the HGLC offerings through marketing activities • Nurtures existing collaborations with partnering organizations, school districts, and industry members by meeting regularly and participating in joint activities as appropriate • Plans and participates in events for the public through speaking engagements, visual presentations, field tours and facility tours • Works collaboratively within a team model • Attends meetings called by the Executive Director or Board of Trustee members • Participates in HGLC activities and events that include occasional evening and weekend hours COMPENSATION/BENEFITS • Contract is for 12 months of year: vacation days provided • Salary range is $38,000 to $42,000 dependent upon degree and experience • Benefits of health insurance and retirement
• Minimum BS in biology, marine science, ecology, environmental science or closely related field • Masters in related field preferred • Minimum of one year of successful science instructional experience • Knowledge of aquarium systems, aquaculture and aquaponics experience preferred • Knowledge of differentiated instructional approaches to meet various learning styles • Knowledge of positive behavioral approaches for working with students • Experiences with multi-aged individuals • Possess problem-solving, decision making and creative thinking abilities • Demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic attitude • Display flexibility to adjust mid-course on a day to day basis as determined by needs of students and team members • Demonstrate self-motivation, able to prioritize and self-initiate on daily basis • Ability to work effectively “solo” and within a team environment • Maine teacher certification (science emphasis) preferred • Proficient with use of instructional and work environment technology equipment and software • Certified in Advanced First Aid or willing to obtain certification • Experience with virtual/remote teaching preferred APPLICATION • Deadline for application for this position is October 13, 2020 or until position is filled • Application may be made by electronically submitting the following: • Resume inclusive of a minimum of 2 professional and 2 personal references • Cover letter SUBMIT TO: Kathy Barker, Executive Director Herring Gut Learning Center does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, political affiliation, age, or religious beliefs in the administration of its education programs.
