Description
POSITION: MCCC Restoration CREW – Brighton WORK SCHEDULE Monday-Thursday, 10-hour days. Job requires overnight travel and has some weekend work. DUTIES: • Controls invasive terrestrial and wetland plants within various state parks • Prepares burn breaks and assist in conducting prescribed burns • Collects, processes, and assist with planting native seed • Burns brush and slash piles • Collects data and completes documentation of field work • Assist with the maintenance of stewardship equipment and the Stewardship Field Office • May lead or assist with volunteer stewardship workdays • May assist with oak wilt control or other forest health related work • May assist with DNR Parks & Rec projects, such as storm damage clean-ups, that are not ecological priorities POSITION INFORMATION: The MCCC Restoration Crew is a traveling field crew for resource management and ecological restoration in Michigan State Parks and Recreation Areas. The MCCC is a job training program that provides field based natural resources experience. Experiences gained will vary based on the seasons of service. Applicants must be physically fit and be willing to work in tough field conditions. Work will include occasional overnight travel to state parks. Crewmembers will be provided lodging and travel reimbursement for meals while on travel status. ABOUT MCCC/AMERICORPS: MCCC Crew members have the option to join AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps is domestic national service which provides educational awards upon completion of set time and performance requirements. The education award may be used for qualifying forms of higher education from vocational training to graduate school or may be used to repay existing qualified student loans. Service awards can be earned for 1700, 1200, and 900. A limited number of smaller terms may be available in the summer. Availability is subject to the time of hire. AmeriCorps Educational Service Awards up to $6,895.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: • Applicants must be between 18 and 27 years of age and meet all other MCCC requirements • Minimum of high school graduate/GED, resident of Michigan • Willing to be away from home for the work week • Willing to use herbicides and pesticides • Willingness to safely use power equipment, including clearing and chain saws • Good physical condition to conduct long days of strenuous field work, often under adverse conditions in remote areas • Must pass a physical examination/fitness test, to work on prescribed burns • Ability to work independently and in a team environment • Must be committed to the stewardship of the natural ecosystems within Michigan State Parks APPLICATION PROCEDURE: • Applications for MCCC positions that start in January are due by December 5th however applications are accepted year-round.
