Overview of the position: The Cariveau Native Bee Lab is recruiting a graduate student to study how management in National Parks influence native bee communities. The specific research questions are open for development by the student but could include the impact of forest management on ground nesting bees, comparing pollinator communities or plant-pollinator interactions among boreal forest habitats, or documenting habitat use among bumble bee species. The student will travel to National Park properties in Minnesota and northern Iowa to collect native bees using a combination of observations, sweep nets and emergence traps. Park locations include Voyageur’s National Park, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Pipestone National Monument, Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The project is funded by the US National Park Service through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (https://www.glri.us). The student will have opportunities to work and interact with biologists in the NPS.
We are seeking either a MSc student or a PhD student that has already earned an MSc. Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Funding includes tuition waiver, health benefits (https://shb.umn.edu/health-plans/gahp-home), and a graduate assistantship stipend (~$7,700 per semester & $5,600 per summer) for 2.5 years.
Our lab group (https://www.beelab.umn.edu/cariveau-native-bee-lab) addresses basic and applied questions related to ecology, natural history and conservation of native bees. Our research ranges from testing sampling methods to evaluating the effectiveness of restorations for native bee communities.
Start Date: The ideal candidate would begin a preliminary field season in May 2021 and start course work in September 2021.

• BS/BA in biology, entomology, ecology, biology, environmental sciences or related field
• Experience conducting field-based research
• Experience working collaboratively in teams as well as independently
