- Conservation Begins Here. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for the Morton Arboretum Tree Conservation Crew. Training Dates: May 1st May 5th (paid mandatory training) Program Dates: May 1st - October 29th, 2023 Location (City and State): Chicago ILSuburbs Primary Responsibilities: Supervise a crew of 3 young-adult women, ages 18+. The Crew can expect to collaborate as a team while working outdoors to perform tree planting and watering as green storm-water infrastructure and habitat enhancement in their communities. Crew Members work outdoors seven hours a day, Monday through Friday with some weeks switching to Tuesday through Saturday, for 26 weeks. They are expected to attend SCA provided trainings to ensure safe and effective tree canopy conservation as well as training in basic digital mapping and data collection techniques. They are also expected to interact and engage with local community members in tree care at designated volunteer events. Crew Members meet at a centralized pick-up and drop-off location and are transported to their work site each day by the Crew Leader. As long as COVID-19 is a threat, Crew Leaders (and members) are expected to do what is necessary to keep their team safe, this includes regular cleaning and disinfection of tools/equipment, regular health check-ins with staff, wearing a mask, and enforcing/following policy and procedures outlined in SCAs COVID management plan. Specifically, the Crew Leader will: Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff
- Qualifications
- Leader Qualifications: The Crew can expect to collaborate with a team to perform tree planting and watering as green storm-water infrastructure and habitat enhancement in their communities. Crew Members work outdoors seven hours a day, Monday through Friday, for 26 weeks. They are expected to attend SCA provided trainings to ensure safe and effective tree canopy conservation as well as training in basic digital mapping and data collection techniques. They are also expected to interact and engage with local community members in tree care at designated volunteer events. Crew Members meet at a centralized pick-up and drop-off location and are transported to their work site each day by the Crew Leader. Must be 23 yrs. or older valid driver's license for 3+ years and clean driving record Current ability to meet SCAs criminal background check standards Must have before start of program current basic First Aid and CPR certifications outdoor skills; experience working with diverse groups ability to maintain a safe, productive and enjoyable work environment. Plant identification skills and knowledge of midwestern ecology strongly preferred.
