Hiring for biological technician contractor (s): one summer -only position (West Glacier, MT) and one spring & summer position (West Glacier, MT during summer/ remote option otherwise).
During the summer, the student(s) biological technician will work in the field conducting biological surveys with a focus on mountain goat fecal pellet collection. Some vegetation identification and other data collection will also be required. Much of the data collection will be at high elevation and off-trail in steep terrain, so experience backpacking and route-finding in remote settings is required. The biological technician contractor will be supervised and directed by the USGS research ecologist to assist with research.
Summer field work (~June-August) will involve substantial backcountry travel, organized as either 8-10 day trips or 4-5 day trips (to be determined based on sample design currently in development). 40 hours per week. Field work will require backpacking for up to 8 days at a time in areas inhabited by grizzly bears with highly variable weather.
For the spring & summer position, spring work will include developing logistical plans for summer field work, including using GIS, with direction of the supervising ecologist. If retained into the fall, the student may also enter and manage datasets, conduct literature reviews, evaluate datasets using the statistical software R, and draft reports. The contractor may also be tasked with other wildlife research related objectives. The student will also participate in meetings in-person and on the phone or other virtual format

Summer only: Backpacking and off-trail route-finding experience required. Sound judgement required. Mountaineering experience preferred. Ability to drive & driver's license required. Wilderness first aid certification preferred.
Summer & spring: Above plus GIS/mapping, experience planning logistics, experience leading teams, and solid organization and communication skills required. Experience in analysis, including substantial experience using R preferred.
