Description
The Walsworth Lab at Utah State University is recruiting a talented MS student to begin in spring semester 2022. Our research focuses broadly on how aquatic ecosystems respond to environmental changes and management efforts. This study will examine the importance of intermittent stream habitats to stream spawning fishes of the Intermountain West. The importance of intermittent streams to the population dynamics of stream salmonids has largely been overlooked. However, seasonal flows in intermittent streams may provide additional suitable spawning habitats, which are often limiting to salmonid populations. Characterizing the spatio-temporal distribution of stream salmonids in intermittent and perennial streams can thus inform whether these habitats support important behavioral and life-history diversity that may buffer populations against change. Additionally, land use regulations can be less restrictive around intermittent streams than perennial streams, potentially driving degradation of habitats in intermittent streams where fishes reside seasonally. This project will incorporate data collected from tributaries of the Logan River in northern Utah and southern Idaho with a long-term and spatially extensive stream habitat dataset from the U.S. Forest Service PIBO Program to examine the extent of spawning in intermittent streams and the effect of grazing on intermittent stream habitats. The results will improve our understanding of the diversity of habitats supporting stream salmonids and how land management practices can impact the quality of seasonally available habitats.
