MS Research Assistantship on efficacy of drone surveys for wading bird productivity: Florida
Florida Atlantic University
Boca Raton, Florida
Last Date to Apply
Successful applicant will join an active lab at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) conducting research on wetland birds and the aquatic ecosystems that support them. Position is part of a long-term project studying factors controlling wading bird populations in the Everglades ecosystems of South Florida. Initial phases of the study focused comparing the effectiveness of traditional wading bird survey methods against the effectiveness of using drones. Currently the focus is on testing the effectiveness of using drones to capture wading bird productivity data across a colonial vegetation gradient.
Applicants should have strong quantitative skills, a good sense of curiosity, a demonstrated ability to work well in teams and to publish a scientific paper. Preference will be given to applicants with a UAV license and experience in avian ecology, wetland ecology, and with analyzing drone data. Field experience with drone studies, aerial surveys, and boat experience will also be seen as advantageous. The candidate will be supported primarily with an externally-funded Research Assistantship of $12,848/year with tuition waiver. Successful applicant will start in January 2022 as a Research Associate and then transition to MS student status in Fall 2022 contingent on their acceptance into the Environmental Science MS program. The position is based on FAU’s main campus in Boca Raton, Florida. Boca Raton is located between the Everglades and an extensive coral reef tract, two of Florida’s most unique natural features. FAU has over 30,000 students and a Carnegie Classification of High Research Activity. Applications will be reviewed on December 8 and the search will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send as a single pdf, a letter of interest, CV, transcripts, GRE scores (unofficial copies will suffice), and the names and contact information for 3 references to Michelle Petersen at email@example.com.
