We are inviting applications for a graduate position (MS) to participate in a restoration ecology research project funded by The Nature Conservancy. The appointment is to begin January 2019 if possible, and no later than the Fall 2019 semester. The most critical factors limiting the effective restoration of thornscrub in South Texas include highly competitive invasive African grasses and the harsh environmental conditions often encountered by transplanted seedlings. The research component of this position is aimed at finding effective strategies to ameliorate these limitations. Strategies such as nutrient manipulation, positive plant-plant interactions, and allelopathy will be tested. An alternative research component relates to carbon sequestration in intact and restoring thornscrub. Opportunities exist for complementary activities with other on-going research projects related to ecological restoration in local estuaries.
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, agronomy or a related field. Successful candidates must demonstrate an aptitude for research and ability to work independently. Prior experience in native plant communities and/or plant biology is preferred, as is the ability to conduct fieldwork occasionally under hot weather conditions. A current, valid U.S. driver's license and good driving record is also preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to enroll full time in the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Biology MS program or the Agricultural, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences MS program pursuing the thesis option. The available scholarship has $16,500 per year, and includes a waiver for in-state-tuition for out-of-state students. In addition, a graduate student assistantship or a teaching assistantship may be available (about $5,000 per semester). Interested applicants should send to Dr. Alejandro Fierro ( a copy of their CV or resume, GPA (minimum 3.0) and GRE scores, transcripts, a written statement of graduate research interests, and contact information for two references. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
