- We are seeking an outstanding student to advance our long-term research program studying the population ecology of small mammals in the Chequamegon/Nicolet National Forest of northern Wisconsin. The student’s thesis will involve a combination of fieldwork and population modeling analyze seasonal small mammal dynamics during both winter and summer. Additional research components could be added depending on shared interests and funding opportunities. The assistantship will begin in January 2024. The student will be advised by Dr. Jonathan Pauli (http://labs.russell.wisc.edu/pauli/) and partner closely with collaborators at the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and US Forest Service. The project is fully funded for 2 years (with likely additional resources, if needed) and includes an annual stipend, plus tuition remission, health care benefits, and support travel, lodging, and field supplies. - Qualifications
- Applicants must have a BS degree in biology, ecology, forestry, wildlife, or other related discipline. A working knowledge of population ecology and statistics is desirable, and field experience especially in capturing, handling, and processing mammals (particularly with small mammals) is preferred. The preferred candidate will also have previous experience collaborating with natural resource agencies and working in remote locations for fieldwork. Excellent English writing and verbal communication skills are essential.
