Description
There are currently 3 available seasonal positions (999 hours max) stationed at Smoky Valley Ranch near Scott City, KS with work duties throughout Kansas. These positions will be directly supervised by Levi Jaster, Big Game Program Coordinator. These positions are being employed to increase and improve KDWP’s Big Game monitoring program, with special emphasis on Mule Deer population monitoring. These positions will work as the KDWP “Mule Deer Team” to gather spotlight distance-sampling data to increase our understanding of Mule Deer population dynamics in Kansas. This data will be used to assist the Big Game Coordinator with decision making in regard to harvest management strategies for Mule Deer. Technicians will also assist with Chronic Wasting Disease sampling efforts and will primarily be tasked with opportunistic CWD sample collection. The incumbent(s) will be expected to know how to read aerial maps and have experience operating a 4WD vehicle. The “Mule Deer Team” will be required to work primarily at night with the use of spotlights for data collection during the survey period. Technicians will be expected to work with deer carcasses and instruments/preservatives necessary for CWD sample collection. Must be able to work well as part of a team and independently and interact well with members of the public, cooperators, and staff. Incumbent(s) will work 40 hours per week, weekend work may be required. Positions run from Oct. 9 to Nov. 22.
Qualifications
Must be reasonably physically fit and be able to perform a variety of demanding tasks in a variety of outdoor settings and weather conditions. Must be able to work independently or as a team member. Required to be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to individuals who are working towards a career in natural resources.
