Description
• Two MS student positions are available to participate in research aimed at improving seed-based ecological restoration in the northern Great Plains. One student will specialize in seed ecology and one will work on milkweed for monarchs. • One technician position is available to help improve the native plant materials supply chain in the northern Great Plains. This position is available for either a MS or BS level candidate. Candidates may start in Jan. 2024 (although slightly earlier or later dates are possible). Laboratory work will occur at South Dakota State University main campus in Brookings, SD. Field work will occur throughout grassland and parks in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. Graduate stipends start at $23K plus tuition remission. Technician salary is commensurate with experience. The Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University combines Range, Wildlife, Fisheries, and Ecology within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science. SDState is the Land Grant University for the state and has approximately 13,000 students. SDState is located in Brookings, SD approximately one hour north of Sioux Falls and four hours east of the Twin Cities, and offers a friendly, small, college-town atmosphere.
Qualifications
Required qualifications for graduate students: a BS/BA in Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Horticulture or related field by December 2023 and an interest in native plants and/or restoration ecology. Required qualifications for technician position: a BS or MS in Ecology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resources. The successful candidate will have strong plant ID skills. Knowledge of the flora of the northern Great Plains is a bonus as is enthusiasm for field work in the beautiful national parks in the region.
