Description
The Great Basin Institute seeks to hire a Museum Specialist to work cooperatively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE) and Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument (PARA) staff to support the Parks’ cultural resources program. Specific duties associated with museum, lab analysis, and data processing, include but are not limited to: • Museum work including accessioning and cataloging of museum objects and archives, processing incoming and outing loans, maintaining museum records, and other miscellaneous tasks associated with the museum collections; • Lab analysis and data processing duties include analysis and cataloging of artifacts, updating of databases, and report preparation. The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required, and lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more. Timeline: o Six month appointment beginning June 2018, or upon completion of a Department of Interior background investigation; o Potential for an extension up to one year, pending available funding and positive performance review; o 40 hours per week; some overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required. Location: Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE) Headquarters is in Boulder City, Nevada, a 30 minute drive from Las Vegas. LAKE encompasses nearly 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, including mountains, canyons, valleys, and two vast lakes. From the mouth of the Grand Canyon, the park follows the Arizona-Nevada border along what was formerly 140 miles of the Colorado River. Opportunities for outdoor recreation abound.
Qualifications
Qualifications: o Educational experience with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree focused on museum studies or a closely related field; applicants with advanced degrees are highly encouraged to apply; applicants who also have archeological field experience are also highly encouraged to apply o Experience in collections management to include registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, housing, and conservation of collections of diverse types of prehistoric and historic period museum material; o Experience with supervision and training of museum technicians, interns, and volunteers; o Ability to work with minimal supervision; o Organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines; o Ability to effectively communicate to a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the pubic, and agency personnel; o Intermediate or higher skill using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate and graphically display data; o Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills; o Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude; o Ability to work productively, consistently, and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals; o Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; o Ability to complete activities including prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more, regularly walk and drive between curation and other facilities; and o Other duties as assigned; occasional archeological fieldwork tasks may be assigned to qualified applicants.
