Description
This is a seasonal job with Environmental Resources Management at Camp Williams. The technician will work with full-time natural resource staff to evaluate and assess potential and current pollinator species and habitat. We are looking for an entomologist who can assess and document pollinator habitat found on Camp Williams (Utah National Guard Installation located ≈ 15 miles south of Salt Lake City) and develop survey methods to establish species presence. Successful applicant will also be able to make recommendations and draft plan for pollinator enhancement areas, and possibly help develop grant proposals. Experience with interpretive design is desirable but not required. We desire applicants who have experience with MS Word and Excel, operate GPS and GIS, and have experience with developing and enhancing habitat for native pollinators. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in these areas and working in a military environment. Applicants must be able to work and hike in steep, rugged terrain in hot, dry conditions, and must have a current driver’s license. The technician will use ATVs for field travel. Example of Tasks • Conduct field work and analyze existing data to map and describe pollinator habitat and species • Draft plans for pollinator habitat creation and enhancement areas • Assist in grant writing to acquire funds for future pollinator projects • Analyzes, summarizes and/or reviews data; reports findings, interprets results and/or makes recommendations for pollinator habitat enhancement. • Identify data and information which suggest developing patterns of problems or complaints, from which general or specific trends and patterns can be discerned, suggesting a need for further investigation. • Writes or drafts technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis. • Other tasks as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Background in entomology and familiar with pollinator species found in inter-mountain west • Experience developing or making recommendations for enhancing native pollinator habitat • Strong time management skills and ability to work independently • deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism • communicate fluently in English • communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing • develop approaches for implementation of an idea, program or change in operations • evaluate information against a set of standards • operate applicable specialized equipment • develop research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information • implement principles, theories, and practices of agricultural science • enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form. Other Requirements • Obtained or working towards a B.A. or B.S. in biology, conservation or related field. • Must be willing and able to work in a hot, dry climate and able to hike cross-country in steep, rocky, heavily vegetated sites carrying up to 20 lbs of equipment. Additionally, Camp Williams is an active military training range with special safety concerns. • Must pass background check and maintain good driving record; must have current government-issued (U.S. - federal or state) picture id.
