- Agency: City of Mentor, Parks & Recreation Department Address: 8500 Civic Blvd. Mentor, OH 44060 Job Category: Permanent Part-Time Website: http://cityofmentor.com/work/employment/ Base Salary: $19-20/hour, 1500 hours annually Start Date: Available for immediate start Last Date to Apply: Open until filled Description: Natural Resources Specialist The primary responsibility of this position will be developing and implementing interpretive programs. Other duties will include assisting the City with the white-tailed deer management program, migratory bird banding, invasive species management, and any other duties related to the goals of the department and agency. Responsibilities: • Create and lead outdoor education programming for the public, volunteer groups, and children. • Assist with the City’s deer management program, including culling duties and involvement with the urban archery hunting program. This includes biological data collection, property inspections, interacting with hunters, interacting with the public regarding the program, tagging deer, transporting harvested animals, and maintaining bait stations. • Manage natural areas and parks within the City including chemical and mechanical methods to remove invasive plants; ability to identify both native plant and animal species. • Handle, identify, and band migratory bird species at the City’s bird banding station, including implementation of educational events relevant to this project • Collect and analyze scientific data pertaining to wildlife populations, vegetative surveys, and land management. • Additional wildlife management duties include dealing with nuisance species such as Canada geese, house sparrows, and coyotes, performing avian surveys, camera-trap data collection, and resolving wildlife conflict issues • Participate in Parks & Recreation Department special events planning and operation. • Responsible for some seasonal staff and occasional oversight of a field crew.
- Qualifications
- Qualification Requirements: • Completed degree in wildlife management, natural resources, ecology, biology, or a related field. • Experience planning and leading interpretive programs; Certified Interpretative Guide preferred. • Preferred experience using chainsaws or brush cutters, handsaws, hand tools, and best practice techniques in the application of herbicides. • Ability to identify, and band migratory and resident bird species. • Experience using Microsoft Office (with an emphasis on Excel), Google Docs, and GIS software. • Will be required to work some nights and weekends both indoors and outdoors. • Experience using four-wheel drive equipment and trailers preferred • Must be able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds for extended periods of time. • Must tolerate inclement temperatures and weather for extended periods of time. • Must have a valid driver’s license.
