Work as part of the unit team to assist in the surveillance of
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in White-tailed deer. Restore
and maintain habitat on public land. This includes performing a
variety of semi-skilled maintenance and technical tasks.
The primary duty of this position is to assist in the collection of tissue samples from White-tailed deer for the surveillance of CWD. This will involve collection of samples from hunter-killed deer, road kills, etc. The person hired for this position will be the lead contact for CWD samples to be collected in Lee County, Iowa, and will also coordinate with taxidermists and local agencies (including the DOT, County Sherriff, State Police, etc.) to help obtain samples.
Additional duties include:
Aid in the restoration and maintenance of tree and shrub
plantings, native prairies, grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands. This includes assisting with prescribed fires and controlling invasive trees and brush with chainsaws, heavy equipment, and through herbicide application.
Assist with the maintenance of the unit facilities and
repairs to equipment.
Work to repair damaged dikes and boundary fences, and help with the construction and maintenance of parking lots, access lanes and roads.
Assist with the establishment of wildlife food plots using
agricultural tractors and implements.
Assist with water level management on wetlands and shallow lakes.

College graduate with a degree in wildlife biology, animal ecology, or another closely related natural resource field.
Able to withstand physically demanding work, including
navigating rough terrain, walking at least 3 miles a day, carrying heavy equipment, frequent lifting, bending, and hauling.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Able to travel on overnight duties.
Work with minimal supervision; demonstrate responsible
behavior and attention to detail.
Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Able to work alone or as part of a team, with the public, in all
conditions, on weekends, holidays, nights, and evenings as
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
Must be available for all interviews and training as required.
