This position requires someone who has several years of experience in safely operating and maintaining heavy equipment (backhoe, bulldozer, excavator, etc). The position will assist with heavy equipment operation related to water conveyance infrastructure maintenance (ditch, dike, and water control structure maintenance, repair, and replacement); loading and hauling of gravel and stone for road maintenance and repair; dike and grassland mowing and/or disking, and any associated equipment and building maintenance and repair. Operator will be required to keep daily activity logs and maintain daily equipment logs for hours of operation, repairs, etc. for operated equipment. Other duties as assigned by the wildlife biologist, wildlife technician, or wildlife assistant. Requires working outdoors in sometimes challenging conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, insects). These positions will require the application of pesticides. The person hired for this position will be required to obtain a pesticide applicator license in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976. The cost of the license will be covered by the State of Michigan.
The Wildlife Division hires more than 55 seasonal employees during the spring/summer season to work at the various locations throughout the state, including State Field Offices, DNR Customer Service Centers, and the State Game Areas. Seasonal staff help in several areas, such as: Assisting with wildlife habitat maintenance and improvement, which may include cutting clearings and adjusting water levels. Mowing, landscaping and facility maintenance duties. Handling tasks related to wildlife surveys, nuisance animal control and equipment operation and maintenance.
