The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking field technicians for the third spring/summer (approx. May 15th - August 1) of the NC Bird Atlas! Positions will be based across the state with each technician stationed in a particular region (Mountains, Piedmont, or Coastal Plain). Technicians will be responsible for conducting point counts and coding breeding behaviors following appropriate atlas protocols. Some night and weekend work will also be required. Work vehicles, shared housing, and all necessary field equipment will be provided. Per diem (up to approx. $40/day) will be provided while working away from your assigned duty station. Technicians should expect extensive travel, possibility for backcountry and/or front country (car camping), long pre-dawn days, inclement weather, biting insects, and hot, humid days. The field season will begin with a short training/calibration in visual and acoustic bird ID skills and our specific protocols (Raleigh, NC).
Candidate must be able to identify North Carolina breeding birds by sight and sound with preferably (but not required) at least one season of field experience. Technician must be able to work well both independently and with a small team in remote areas. Must be willing to work early mornings, some evenings and weekends, and travel extensively. Valid driver’s license and good driving record required. These positions are not overtime eligible. Technicians will be expected to follow all NC/NC WRC COVID-19 guidelines.
