Description
I seek an undergraduate student (sophomore-junior) to work remotely on a dataset project related to my long-term study of Octodon degussociality. The student will build an Excel dataset on direct fitness (two metrics) and examine relationships between social and environmental variables and direct fitness. The project will run for ten weeks during summer 2020 (exact dates are negotiable). I aim to promote human diversity in STEM. Thus, priority will be given to qualified students who identify as a member of an under-represented minority group. Position responsibilities • Complete research ethics training courses • Read the relevant primary literature • Build an Excel dataset using the information provided by the lead investigators • Meet remotely with lead investigators, including collaborators in Chile • Attend a weekly seminar on social evolution • Assist with data analysis • Submit regular progress reports and a final report
Qualifications
• United States citizen • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program through fall 2021 • Major in Biology or related field (ecology or animal behavior focus) • Strong academic background, including relevant coursework in Ecology, Evolution, and/or Animal Behavior • Access to a secure computer with reliable internet • Ability to attend remote meetings between 0900 – 1800 hr (Eastern) • Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the project • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel • Familiarity with storage apps (e.g., DropBox), Zoom, and Slack • Strong communication skills Please email a single PDF containing the following documents to Dr. Loren Hayes (loren-hayes@utc.edu) by30 December 2020: • One-page statement addressing your research interests and how you meet the responsibilities and requirements listed above. • One-page personal statement with relevant background and future goals • Unofficial academic transcripts • Resume with names and contact information of two people who can comment on your academic achievements and/or research experience
