Huntsville City Schools (HCS) Chat Line: Tutor Job Description HCS Chat Line offers one-on-one private tutoring. The web-based Chat Line will direct all students to a qualified tutor for 10-15 minutes per session via a virtual platform with a whiteboard capability. We will provide high-quality services for students and families in need of homework assistance after school hours. We are looking for reliable, academically driven tutors with a strong ability to work with students in a virtual setting. Overview of Program: The Chat Line will direct all users to a qualified tutor for 10-15 minutes per session. Tutors with subject and grade level strengths will be available to match with students’ academic needs working in a whitespace with video. The Chat Line will be available afternoon and evening hours. 4pm-8pm for K-5 and 5pm-9pm for 6th-12th. Responsibilities Conduct tutoring sessions virtually using a tablet in an whiteboard setting Work with students to deliver tailored and structured instruction to address their homework challenges Contribute to student learning, growth, and advancement. Demonstrate academic competence in subject area(s). Maintain a growth mindset toward student learning and teaching practice. Commit to a first response that enhances a student’s executive functioning skills. Ability to ascertain quickly and problem-solve with student on academic, emotional, and social concerns, expediting any serious concerns back to the Call Center Manager or Crisis Hotline Complete all required training components prior to the beginning of tutor sessions Work with co-managers to schedule availability according to the Chat Line needs Give adequate notice when unable to meet scheduling commitments and limit this to emergencies only (48 hour notice minimum) Be familiar with the HCS pacing guides in applicable subject/grade level areas Collaborate with co-managers to refine and troubleshoot chatlines to improve experience for students and tutors. Be patient, flexible, positive, consistent, dependable, and display emotional maturity and a cooperative and enthusiastic attitude with a sense of humor. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education or subject-matter field (teaching certificate a plus) Recent teaching experience with references and certificates, as well as licensure information provided. Bachelor’s degree in progress with a minimum GPA of 3.5-- academic references required if not a graduate Honors high school juniors and seniors who are experienced with tutoring and have a recommendation letter from their principal Access to the internet, a high quality computer, and a smartphone with excellent internet connection Strong technical skills including Google Workspace, Virtual learning, and tablet/whiteboard experience
