Our Outdoor Educator positions will provide you with the tools and training to lead nature camp programming, provide effective child management, and teach in an outdoor setting. NH Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student led approach to our teaching methods which is aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world. The Outdoor Educator positions will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by planning and conducting daily lessons and activities for campers on environmental education, assisting with camp coordination of daily nature-based activities, and supervising campers during extended care programs. Summary: This position is based out of EITHER our Massabesic Center located in Auburn, NH OR our McLane Center in Concord, NH and will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people by supporting our summer camp experiences. Location: McLane Center (Concord, NH) or Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH) Pay Rate: $14-15/hour Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm (1-hour unpaid lunch break), seasonal full-time, non-exempt Schedule: June 12-Aug 25, 2023 (11 weeks total includes 9 weeks of camp plus training and wrap-up) Function: This position will entail planning and conducting daily lessons and activities for campers in environmental education topics, implementation of daily nature-based activities, and supervision of campers, ranging in ages from 4-15, during the entirety of the camp day. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Attends all training sessions prior to the camp season. Develops and implements daily environmental activities for 4-5 and/or 6-12 year old campers. Submits written lesson plans to Camp Director before each session. Assists with planning and teaching all camp environmental lessons and activities for campers. Communicates effectively and respectfully to campers and parents. Communicates clearly and effectively to Camp Director, Camp Counselors, and fellow Outdoor Educators on camper behavior, safety, and other camp activity feedback. Oversees and maintains responsibility for camper safety, well-being, and fun, alongside Camp Counselors, including camper check-in and check-out procedures. Provides first aid to campers as needed. Maintains program supplies in good condition. Performs facility and supply cleaning duties as assigned. Will participate in camp evaluation and cleanup at the end of the session. Ensures compliance with NH’s COVID safety guidelines for summer camps. Performs other duties as assigned. Leadership: Reports to the Camp Director Working Conditions: Outdoor camp setting; excellent non-smoking environment. - Qualifications
- QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Basic understanding of biology/ecology/geology (high school level life or earth sciences) required. College level coursework in elementary education, environmental education, outdoor education, biology, natural history or related field preferred. Training regarding effective outdoor education teaching methods and site-specific opportunities for ecological learning will be provided. Experience: Eagerness and excitement to share basic facts about biology/ecology in fun, interactive ways is required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required. Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid certification and CPR certification or equivalent, or willingness to obtain certifications; ARC Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent desirable. Experience teaching children, preferably in a camp setting and demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and lead creative environmental education activities is required. Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Creativity, flexibility and enthusiasm, with a sincere interest in the natural environment or education is necessary. Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and can provide COVID vaccination card at orientation. Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting and able to lift up to 25 lbs. Camp uniform required (will be provided).
