Northwest Youth Corps - AmeriCorps 680 Hour Individual Placement U.S. Forest Service Payette National Forest Council Ranger District Position Title: Forestry Technician (Developed Recreation) AmeriCorps Member - 680 HR Position Summary: The Payette National Forest, Council District is recruiting (1) 680 Hour Forestry Technician (Developed Recreation) AmeriCorps Member beginning June through September 2023. Start/end dates are flexible depending on candidate availability. Incumbent will primarily maintain recreation facilities, campgrounds, and trailheads on the West Zone of the Payette National Forest. This placement will typically work five eight-hour days per week, likely Wednesday through Sunday. Days worked each week will be determined prior to placement. Duties and Responsibilities: Duties will include serving with FS employees, 60% maintaining and cleaning recreation facilities; 20% maintaining campgrounds and trailheads; and 20% cleaning and maintaining tools. This requires driving and working outdoors with a partner and/or independently. Projects will include recreation facility cleaning and performing minor improvements; forestry related tasks; trailhead and campground improvements; constructing, repairing, and installing trailhead signs/kiosks, and other minor carpentry projects. Required Qualifications: Willingness to work as part of a small team with little to no supervision Good written and verbal communication skills Willingness and ability to share information and regulations with our diverse visiting public A positive attitude and safety orientated Current/valid driver's license to be able to drive to developed/dispersed sites Ability to lift and carry 35 lbs. or more at times Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground Desired Qualifications: Attention to detail. Physically fit for long days of hard work. Experience with hand tools, some powered/cordless tools and basic carpentry skills. Coursework in recreation management, forestry, natural resources, or related field A strong interest in resource management and the care of their public lands. Duty/Housing Location: Duties are performed out of the Council Ranger District and at times in Weiser Ranger District. Council is located 2.5 hours north of Boise, ID and 3 hours south Lewiston, ID. Government-provided housing is available in Council. Terms of Employment: One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June through September 2023. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours. Program Benefits: A $7650 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and a $2474.27 education award upon completion of the 680 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
