Idaho Conservation Corps - AmeriCorps 480 Hour Individual Placement U.S. Forest Service Payette National Forest Krassel Ranger District Position Title: Fuels Technician AmeriCorps Member - 480 Hour Position Summary: Payette National Forest, Krassel Ranger District is recruiting for two 480 Hour Fuels Technician AmeriCorps Members from May to August 2023. Summary of work includes preparation of non-commercial thinning layouts, inspection and plot work, prescribed fire preparation and silviculture prescriptions. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties for this position include: (75 %) Using Avenza and other geospatial software to layout units. Inspection of non-commercial thinning contracts and plot work (25%). Cross training with the Silviculture and Timber Management Programs. On-the-job training will also cover how to write silviculture prescriptions as well as commercial and TSI layout. Required Qualifications: Driver's License Good verbal communication skills. Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground Desired Qualifications: A high level of prior experience is not required because of the on-the-job training opportunities. Ability to drive on mountain roads in various conditions Knowledge of conifers in central Idaho and tree identification skills Knowledge of the fundamentals of tree measurements (height, DBH, LCR, etc.) Some knowledge of GPS Willingness and ability to work in the outdoors Ability to carry heavy packs and work for 10-hour days on sometimes steep/rugged terrain Ability to work well with others Duty Location: Duties are performed within the Payette National Forest. Duty Station will be in the Krassel Ranger District. Housing may be provided. Terms of Employment: Each AmeriCorps members will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May through August 2023. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps Member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours. Program Benefits: A $5400 living allowance, prorated on a pay period (monthly) basis. A $1,718.25 education award upon completion of the 480 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
