The department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology is recruiting a quantitatively oriented student for a Ph.D. assistantship.
Project: The graduate student is expected to conduct research into the population dynamics of Wisconsin elk relative to predation risk from wolves and variation in habitat. This project is collaboration between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the Universities of Wisconsin at Madison and Stevens Point.
This is a four-year project and funding is contingent on renewal each year. Project can begin as early as July 1 2018.
This project takes advantage of archived monitoring data and on-going field work to model the population dynamics of two introduced elk herds in Wisconsin. Specific objectives will include:
1) Modeling the long-term population dynamics of Wisconsin elk
2) Developing a spatially explicit model of wolf-predation risk for elk
3) Linking changes in historic elk population growth rates to variation in wolf densities and predation risk
4) Modeling the spatial interactions between wolves and newly established elk populations
1) Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife management, Ecology or equivalent
2) Excellent GPA and GRE scores (subject test not required)
3) Demonstrated skill and training in statistical analysis, especially multivariate techniques and Bayesian modeling.
4) Skill and training in spatial analysis
5) Publication of prior research work
6) Aptitude for field work under difficult weather conditions and in remote areas
7) Ability to work collaboratively within a team of agency and academic researchers
8) Ability to work collaboratively with landowners and other stakeholders
