- STARTING DATE: May or August 2023 CLOSING DATE: The position is open until filled. DESCRIPTION: The James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center at Clemson University is recruiting a highly motivated Ph.D. or M.S. student interested in incorporating eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) into salt marsh restoration and mitigation. The student will evaluate novel techniques for establishing and enhancing oyster beds within a salt marsh mitigation banking project. This coastal South Carolina study takes a unique approach of melding salt marsh and oyster bed restoration into a planned salt marsh mitigation bank. The research will incorporate waterbird use, hydrology, water quality, vegetation, oyster bed productivity, and nektonic and benthic organism response to restoration techniques designed to restore natural tidal flow. This interdisciplinary project allows ample opportunities for the student to work with multiple biotic and abiotic parameters, interact with faculty from various disciplines, and engage with wetland mitigation banking personnel. The student will be working toward a graduate degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology at Clemson University (Wildlife and Fisheries Biology (MWFR, MS, PhD) (clemson.edu)). Clemson University (http://www.clemson.edu/about/) is a public land-grant Carnegie R1 Research University in a college town atmosphere on Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Students will take classes on the main campus and conduct fieldwork near Edisto Island, South Carolina. - B.S. (for M.S.) and M.S. (for Ph.D.) in Wildlife, Wetlands, Ecology, or a closely related field. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.25. A strong interest or experience in wetland restoration and oyster ecology is essential. Interest in waterbirds, vegetation, and macroinvertebrates is also desirable. Background in statistics, modeling, and publishing is a plus. Physical exertion in the field will be required. STIPEND: $25,000 (Ph.D.) or $23,000 (M.S.) plus tuition waiver.
