The position would begin for fall semester 2022 at the waterfront Marine Sciences Building on the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus.
The Fisheries and Ecosystem Assessment Lab (http://www.fiufeal.com/) focuses on fisheries ecology, population dynamics, stock assessment, and ecological modeling. More specifically, we apply statistical methods to survey data to improve sampling programs. We study spatial interactions among species and environmental variables. We develop and apply quantitative modeling approaches, such as age/length-structured, single/multi-species, and individual-based models to assess and predict population dynamics. We build management strategy evaluation approaches to evaluate the potential impacts and the risk of alternative strategies in fisheries management. We also develop ecological models to explore the trophic interactions among species, identify the keystone species, and understand how environmental changes affect fish stocks.
Four years funding support (as a Teaching Assistant): a stipend of $25,010/year + tuition waiver + health insurance. Students with GRE >1350 and GPA > 3.5 will have an opportunity to compete for the Presidential Fellowship. Although not required, high GRE scores do help your chances of admission.
Applicants should ideally have a M.S. degree in biology, ecology, oceanography, or a related field. As the research is very quantitative and computation-based, this graduate assistantship will be awarded competitively to recipients with solid quantitative and computer programming skills. For other admission requirements of Florida International University, please see http://biology.fiu.edu/academics/graduate-programs/phd-application-information/. Applicants should be sure to request a teaching assistantship on the application.
