Description
Description: A graduate research assistantship (PhD) investigating the influence of heterogeneity-based land management strategies on the conservation of Northern Great Plains ecosystems is available in the School of Natural Resource Sciences at North Dakota State University. To improve our understanding of ecosystem dynamics in working landscapes this student will have the opportunity to monitor small mammals and native and invasive vegetation managed with both livestock grazing and multiple seasons of prescribed fire. The student will join an inter-disciplinary team of researchers and will have the opportunity to collaborate with other graduate students and faculty. The Central Grasslands Research Extension Center is situated in Missouri Coteau Ecoregion commonly referred to as the prairie pothole. The landscape is one of the largest intact mixed-grass prairie ecosystems with diverse vegetation, multiple wetland complexes and abundant migratory birds. The area has not been regularly burned for decades with potential fire exclusion since European settlement. Comfortable living and office accommodations are provided at the research center during field seasons. The project has a flexible start date after January 1 2018.
