Description
The Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is inviting applications for a PhD level Graduate Research Assistantship beginning Spring 2023. Assistantships are on a 12-month basis; they pay $1,889/month and include a full tuition and fee waiver and $90,000 support for research activities. A student is needed to assist in long-term projects addressing both applied and theoretical questions regarding the influence of grassland vegetation management and community structure on variation in wildlife interactions and community assemblages (birds, mammals, snake, amphibians, and invertebrate) on Burning Star 5 State Wildlife Area and Pyramid Sate Park in southern Illinois. Although the long-term studies emphasize the impacts to bobwhite quail populations, flexibility in research objectives is adequate to allow the student to focus their dissertation on the taxonomic group that most meets their interest. Graduate studies will lead to a PhD degree in Zoology or Ecology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Qualifications
Competitive candidates will have completed a Bachelor’s and M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology, Zoology, or a related field is preferred; however, exceptional candidates with a Bachelor of Science only will be considered. Ability to conduct rigorous fieldwork under extreme conditions is required. For candidates interested in pursuing a career in avian ecology, demonstrated experience identifying grassland nesting birds is desirable, but not essential. Similarly, for those interested in pursuing a career focused on one of the other taxonomic groups, previous experience identifying, capturing, and handling that group is desired but not required. Applicants should provide a letter of interest that includes a brief biological sketch and career goals, a resume and academic transcripts (unofficial copy is fine). I will begin reviewing applications as they arrive and continue until the position is filled. Application packets will be provided to candidates selected for further consideration.
