We are seeking a graduate student (PhD) to join the rangeland wildlife ecology lab at North Dakota State University that will investigate pheasant resource selection and survival throughout the year. We are most interested in how large-scale factors like land cover and land management influence survival at critical times of the year in addition to how finer scale management decisions influence things like nest site selection and nest survival. The research will take place in the southwest region of North Dakota and the successful candidate will be housed at NDSU’s Hettinger Research Extension Center during summers and critical times of the winter but will take classes on main campus in Fargo, ND. This student will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team and will have opportunities to collaborate on multiple projects related to wildlife in rangelands.
Hettinger is situated near some of the best outdoor opportunities in North Dakota. It is within an hour drive of the Missouri National Grasslands and Theodore Roosevelt State Park. It has some of the best upland gamebird hunting in the Midwest and is home to white-tailed deer, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope. Non-consumptive recreational opportunities are also plentiful on state and federal lands including hiking, biking, and birding.
Candidates must have a Master of Science degree from an accredited university and a valid driver’s license. The most competitive applicants will have multiple years of field experience including previous work with grassland bird communities, capturing gamebirds, and telemetry. Individuals should have a working understanding of rangeland management practices, spatial analytical tools, and gamebird biology. Students will be expected to work well independently and with a team and should have experience using some or all of the following: GIS, R, MARK, and unMarked.
The position will be open until filled. The latest preferred start date is May 1 but all dates are negotiable. I encourage all interested candidates to apply as soon as possible because candidates will be evaluated as soon as applications are received.
To APPLY: Submit 1 document (.pdf) that includes a 1) cover letter discussing your qualifications and future goals, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) transcripts (unofficial), 4) three professional references to email@example.com.
