- I am looking for a highly motivated PhD student to do research within the area of ecological interactions between vertebrate wildlife hosts (mostly mammals) and ticks. The context for this research is focused on the role these interactions have to contribute to the maintenance and spread of pathogens vectored by ticks. Specific research questions are flexible within this area and will be dependent on specific research interests of the student within this academic field. The focus of analyses will likely be data derived mostly from fieldwork about vertebrate communities, individual host species behavior, and tick monitoring, all within an ecological context and potentially complemented with habitat use modeling. Thus, a student with highly quantitative and integrative mindset is an asset and one well suited for this project. Support for this PhD position will be through a Research Assistantship starting in Fall 2023. This RA will provide $3,300 per month for 12 months, will include tuition remission and is renewable for up to four years upon satisfactory degree progress. - Qualifications
- Required Qualifications: • Bachelor and Master’s degree in wildlife science, biology, ecology or related fields. • >3.5 GPA for both degrees. • Highly quantitative aptitude and statistical knowledge. • Excellent writing ability (e.g., thesis or publications). • Previous experience conducting research. • Excellent knowledge about taxonomy/ecology of mammals. • Must be self-motivated, organized, responsible and being able to coordinate with a large group of colleagues. • Must be willing to quickly learn relevant specific analytical methods. Preferred Qualifications • Experience doing fieldwork with ticks. • Experience doing fieldwork with wildlife. • Experience with GIS and modeling. • Experience or familiarity with the use of null models in ecology.
