Description
Dr. Chelse Prather’s Insect ecology lab at University of Dayton (UD) is recruiting for a PhD student to work on questions at the interface of community and ecosystem ecology using insect communities. I am seeking an intellectually curious student that is excited about the often uncomfortable realities of tough field work, the careful work of experimentation, and who has an eagerness to learn and implement complex statistical analyses. I will work with the student to come up with an exciting PhD dissertation topic suited to their interests. Some of the topics that the lab is interested are: micronutrient (e.g., Na and Ca) limitation of insects, insect effects on ecosystem functioning (we have worked on this question in grasslands in Texas and rainforests in Puerto Rico), and insect communities in urban environments (e.g., prairies underneath solar arrays, urban farms, and green roofs). We have field sites in grasslands in Texas and the local Dayton area as well as rainforests in Puerto Rico, and we have worked with a wide variety of insects (e.g., walking sticks, grasshoppers and katydids, ants, beetles, and true bugs). The student will be initially supported by a teaching assistantship through the Department of Biology at UD. The assistantship is associated with a stipend of ~$20,000/year; however, a portion of this comes in the form of a University summer fellowship which is awarded through a competitive process. The assistantship also comes with 100% tuition remission. Support is guaranteed for the life of the project pending satisfactory performance. Dr. Prather’s Insect Ecology lab is committed to creating an environment that is supportive of all aspiring scientists, values the perspectives of traditional and nontraditional backgrounds, and hears the perspectives of underrepresented groups in STEM. We believe the diversity brought by students from different racial identities, gender identities, sexualities, visible and invisible disabilities, ages, socioeconomic status, ethnicities, nationalities, religions, and cultures makes our science stronger, just as a diverse array of organisms in an ecosystem strengthens its resilience. We strive to create an atmosphere that promotes the safety, well-being, and success of those that work in the lab. We seek to do science to understand basic biological processes that also will have meaningful connections to society. UD is the largest private university in the state of Ohio, and is consistently award winning for both academic programs and scholarship http://www.udayton.edu/awards_and_rankings.php. Enrollment is ~11,000 with approximately 3,000 graduate students. Some benefits to being a graduate student in this department are: a small-school feel but with laboratories that do serious scientific research; small lab sizes means more tailored mentorship from your advisor; and the ability to involve excited undergrads in your graduate work. It is also an exciting time to come into our department as we are in the process of hiring two more assistant professors in ecology this year.
