A temporary field technician is needed to assist with southeastern pocket gopher sampling at the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center at Ichauway. The position is 40 hours per week (exact lengths will vary each 7-day period) starting approximately September 17th and continuing for up to 12 weeks. Exact start and finish dates are negotiable. Duties include trapping pocket gophers and relocating them after implanting VHF transmitters then tracking them. Duties require driving around looking for pocket gopher mounds and digging holes for many hours in the southern sun, heat, and bugs.
Applicants should have a strong interest, coursework, or experience working in ecology, biology, wildlife, or a related field. Experience working in South Georgia is a plus but not required. Experience working with telemetry and transmitter surgery is a plus but not required. Candidates must have the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time (up to 12 hours per day) over uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Must have the ability to shovel for many hours each day. Moderate risks include, but are not limited to, snake or insect bites or stings, exposure to sun, and exposure to extreme or adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, high humidity, and rain.
