Lindahl Reed is hiring wildlife biologists, or equivalent, to support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), Fisheries and Ecological Services Division in Region 7, Alaska. The candidates will support research and analyses of the impact of industrial activities on polar bears. A recent draft Incidental Take Regulations (ITR) for proposed seismic surveys in the 1002 Area identified a number of data gaps that, if filled, would allow the Service to more precisely estimate the effects of industrial activities on polar bears. This information is especially timely because the development of an updated ITR for oil and gas activities for the southern Beaufort Sea region needs to be completed by 2021. The Service is seeking support in the five research areas identified for further research and analysis. The research areas are: (1) Estimation of the efficacy of aerial infrared on den detection; (2) Estimation of the relationship between cub survival and the date of den phenology; (3) Assessment of differences in behavior and cub survival for polar bears denning near/far from existing industrial development; (4) Develop a formal estimate of the number of dens in the 1002 Area and northern Alaska coast; and (5) Develop a population risk assessment for the Southern Beaufort Sea polar bear population in relation to human activity. The support will include field work, data analysis and preparation of five manuscripts suitable for publication in peer review journals.
Primary duties include:
Field study design, including logistical planning and budget estimation
Field studies in and around Alaska
Information collection, review, compilation, and analysis
Data review and statistical analysis
Manuscript preparation and editing
Close coordination with FWS

Minimum Basic Requirement for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials:
*PhD degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, natural resource management, environmental science, biology, or related field.
*Demonstrated experience in design-based and mark-recapture-based population estimation.
*Demonstrated experience in analysis of wildlife demographic data, including the use of matrix population models, and ideally population risk assessments.
*At least five first-authored publications published in peer-reviewed journals.
*Extensive experience in the use of the statistical program R.Must be able to write their own code and functions, and use and modify code developed by others to meet the specific needs of an analysis.
*Demonstrated experience with the use of Bayesian statistics for the analysis of wildlife data and the use of program JAGS, WinBugs, or other similar program to conduct Bayesian analysis integrated with program R.
*Familiarity with hierarchical Bayesian models.
*Demonstrated experience working with GIS data in either ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro.
*Ability to work collaboratively and take constructive criticism.
*US Citizenship is required.
*Ability to pass a government-administered background investigation in order to be granted access to government IT systems.
