We are hiring technicians for a state-wide pollinator research effort by North Dakota State University. Technicians will measure bee and butterfly populations and vegetation parameters across North Dakota grassland ecosystems. This research is unique in its large geographic scope and it will produce the first state-wide baseline of pollinators for this region.
Each of North Dakota’s 53 counties will have three assigned survey sites that technicians will visit two times throughout the field season (May 28th to late August). Technicians will work in a team of two, each team assigned to one quadrant of North Dakota. Technicians will trained in the following survey techniques:
- Visual encounter surveys and line-transect distance sampling of butterflies
- Net collection and passive bee bowl trapping of bees
- Belt transect sampling and canopy cover estimation of vegetation
Typical challenges associated with working in grasslands do apply. Expect to deal with wide ranging climatic conditions, bugs, intense sun, and long days in the field. Housing will be provided.
The most competitive applicants will have scientific field experience, previous work with pollinators, and the ability to identify grassland plants down to species.
Technicians will be living and working very closely with their fellow team member, so a positive attitude and ability to get along well with others is a must. Applicants should also be self-reliant, motivated, and flexible. This is a large-scale project that will require excellent communication skills.
Applicants must be willing to regularly work over 40 hours per week including some weekends, and must be willing to work for the entire field season (May 28th to late August).
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle they can travel to North Dakota in.
A passion for pollinators is highly preferred! This is the second year of an ongoing project that will continue through the summer of 2020. Applicants who are interested in joining this project for multiple field seasons are highly encouraged to apply.
To apply please email a cover letter, CV, and three professional references. Applicants are hired on a rolling basis and positions will likely be filled before the application deadline.
