Description
We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral scholar to examine design of hunter harvest surveys in Texas. The University of Montana (UM) and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) are collaborating to review past harvest survey practices and provide recommendations for future harvest survey design. TPWD regulates hunting of many birds and mammals requiring accurate information on hunters and harvest on an annual basis for the management of wildlife in Texas. TPWD has been using standard methodologies from Cochran (1977), but has not evaluated these methodologies and the addition of email addresses collected in our licensing system for nearly 20 years. However, as e-mail delivered surveys has been capable the last few years with increased e-mail addresses in the license system, along with statistical advances, increases in mandatory reporting on white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, and declining response ratees, there is a need to review these methodologies to improve accurate and precise estimates of harvest across the state in both mammals and birds. We seek a post-doc to review the types of licenses and harvest surveys currently applied in Texas, apply past data to gain insight into new survey design possibilities, consider how changing technology may influence survey design and implementation.
