The USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center at Patuxent Research Refuge is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position in wildlife (avian) pathogen discovery. This position is at the GS-11 level (~$73,000/year), initially for 12 months with a possibility of renewal for up to 4 years pending satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The appointment can start as soon as March 2022.
Research in our group is focused on the effects of diverse anthropogenic and natural environmental stressors (e.g., pesticides, pharmaceuticals, PFAS, algal toxins) on wildlife health (including microbiome, immune and endocrine systems), and wildlife and zoonotic pathogen emergence.
The pathogen discovery position will work on a project utilizing modern sequencing technologies, bioinformatics tools, and microbial databases to conduct broad, multidomain surveys of emerging pathogens, their virulence and antibiotic resistance in birds and wildlife in urban and other anthropogenically altered landscapes. We are particularly interested in candidates with field or laboratory experience with birds or other wildlife. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in wildlife biology, molecular ecology, microbiology or other related field in the life sciences, and experience in computational and molecular biology (next generation sequencing, genome assembly, molecular assays).
• Excellent verbal and written skills in English are essential.
• A proven track record in scientific publication.
• The ideal candidates will also have experience in scientific grant and report writing.
• Candidates must be able to perform desired analyses independently, analyze data with common statistical packages, write publishable manuscripts, and communicate and work effectively with multiple PIs.
The position is only open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
To apply for the positions, please submit (i) a cover letter indicating the position for which you are applying, and outlining your qualifications, scientific achievements, interests in the position and the project, and career aspirations; (ii) a curriculum vitae; and (iii) contact information for three professional references.
