We seek a post-doctoral researcher for work related to understanding the adaptive capacity of widely distributed taxa based on measures of intraspecific diversity. The candidate will work with collaborative teams of ecologists, geneticists, and modelers across different academic institutions and government agencies and will be embedded in the research network of the GEM3 project https://www.idahogem3.org/). The position will provide a unique opportunity to contribute to an interdisciplinary research program that addresses the National Science Foundation’s research priority of quantifying the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to phenotypic expression (i.e., linking genome to phenome).
The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to spearhead independent research projects under the umbrella of GEM3 research, focusing on quantifying adaptive variation in fish taxa native to western North America. Possible research topics include: linking gene expression and environmental conditions or variables, investigating the role of epigenetics in phenotypic plasticity, mechanisms of local adaptation, ecological and evolutionary responses to environmental change, and phylogeography. The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and play an important role in the training of ISU graduate students in experimental design and data analysis. The postdoc will work directly with GEM3 faculty at Idaho State University and collaborate with other GEM3 team members at the University of Idaho and Boise State University.
● PhD in evolutionary biology, ecology, population genetics or closely related field.
● Knowledge of arid ecosystems and quantitative ecology, interest in links between genome and phenome.
● Previous experience in designing and executing field studies or laboratory experiments examining adaptive variation.
● Strong oral and written communication skills.
● Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment, in a large research team as well as independently.
● Experience with R, SAS, Python programming or other programming languages.
● Mentoring undergraduates and graduate students.
● Knowledge of molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA manipulation, PCR, qPCR) and next-generation sequencing using platforms such as Illumina and Oxford Nanopore.
● Interest, experience, and/or ability to promote STEM diversity and inclusion.
