Postdoctoral Research Associate: Biological Oceanography, Marine Science, Marine Ecology, Fish Biology, Fisheries Biology
The University of Mississippi (https://www.olemiss.edu/) and the UM Center for Biodiversity and Conservation Research (https://cbcr.olemiss.edu/) announce the availability of a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in oceanography/marine science/marine ecology to work with Dr. Glenn Parsons and Dr. Richard Buchholz in the Department of Biology. The successful candidate will assist researchers in the development, deployment and evaluation of the Gulf Coast Citizen Science Initiative (GMCSI), through a grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the RESTORE Council. GMCSI will help with conservation management of marine and coastal resources along the north central Gulf of Mexico through development of a smart phone app to document changes in the marine environment, eventually resulting in a multi-year data base. The Mobile App for Marine Assessment (MAMA) will: 1. provide increased understanding of the marine environment 2. promote public awareness and educate our citizenry regarding marine environmental issues, and 3. create an important data-base that will help protect our dwindling marine resources. The project may involve travel to meet with resource managers, to meet with coastal residents to explain the program, and to present at scientific conferences. This full-time position is for a term of up to two years. Starting date is flexible within the first half of 2021, but sooner is better.
This project was paid for [in part] with federal funding from the RESTORE Council and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality under the Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coasts Act of 2012 (RESTORE Act). The data, statements, findings, conclusion, and recommendations are those of the author[s] and do not necessarily reflect any determinations, views, or policies of the RESTORE Council of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality
Required Qualifications: Education at the time of appointment; the successful applicant will have a PhD in marine science, biological oceanography, marine ecology, fisheries science or similar.
