- Are you interested in how marine heatwaves and ocean warming challenge fish physiology in novel ways? We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join a new project “Looking Past to see the Future,” funded by the North Pacific Research Board. The project involves the use of archived modern and archaeological otolith collections and otolith-derived proxies for temperature (δ18O), metabolism, and growth to examine the frequency of potential physiological and behavioral responses before, during, and after a modern marine heatwave and in prehistoric periods with a greater range of environmental conditions. Successful applicant will work with researchers at OSU (Dr. Jessica Miller), University of Alaska Fairbanks (Dr. Nicole Misarti), Cornell University (Dr. L. Zoe Almeida), and NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center (Dr. Ben Laurel). Applicants with experience in biogeochemical applications such as otolith chemistry are particularly encouraged to apply. Required qualifications: - Ph.D. in ecology, fisheries biology, oceanography, or a closely related field. - Strong quantitative skills. Experience with R or similar statistical/programming language. - Demonstrated ability to generate peer-reviewed scientific publications. Preferred qualifications: - Peer-reviewed publication record in the field of marine or fisheries ecology. - Demonstrated experience in analysis of growth structures and geochemical analysis and interpretation. - Strong interest in collaborative research. Position Available: April 1, 2023 (open until filled) The position is renewable annually on a fiscal year basis (as long as the postdoctoral scholar is within five years from receipt of their doctoral degree), and funding is available for at least 18 months. Modest travel budget included. Re-appointment is at the discretion of the Principal Investigator and the OSU Office of Postdoctoral Programs.
