The Program Manager will work under the direct supervision of the Program Director to provide logistical support, technical guidance and training, and on-the-ground supervision to youth corps crews in the field. CCYC operates a 3-season schedule (spring, summer, fall), with between 8 and 12 crews a year. The Program Manager will be fundamentally responsible for the ability of crews to efficiently complete their work assignments; this will include acquiring and maintaining appropriate equipment, ensuring adequate technical training for crews and facilitating communication between the project sponsors (e.g. federal agency representatives), crew leaders and other CCYC staff. The Program Manager will assist the Program Director in project planning and coordination. The position requires an extensive knowledge of natural resource management logistics and techniques, including but not limited to chainsaw operation and maintenance, fencing, trail construction, wildland herbicide application and fuel reduction. The position will also demand a high level of organization, strong leadership skills, creative thinking and planning to address unanticipated concerns, as well as an enthusiasm for traveling and working outside in remote areas of the Colorado Plateau. The Program Manager will spend 20%-50% of their time in the field depending on the season and program needs. Program Manager Responsibilities & Functions Program Logistics: Supervise and coordinate all CCYC Crew Members, Crew Leaders and Field Boss in association with the Program Director. Implement, supervise and coordinate trainings for all CCYC Crew Members, Crew Leaders and Field Boss in association with the Program Director. Manage and organize a clean and efficient operations center (CCDC Basecamp). Maintain and repair equipment and tools including a fleet of chainsaws. Supervise de-rigs and re-supply of tools, equipment and food for all crews. Facilitate de-briefs with Crew Leaders and Members. Facilitate performance reviews of Crew Leaders and Crew Members. Maintain an accurate inventory of CCYC tools and equipment. Purchase, maintain and repair hand tools, forestry equipment, camp equipment, uniforms and supplies as needed. Maintain a clean and functional food storage area, while facilitating efficient meal planning and shopping by crew leaders. Plan for the logistics associated with projects as they arise and communicate logistics clearly to CCYC members and staff. Plan for the logistics associated with new projects as they arise. Build and maintain relationships with partners in federal, state, city and county land management agencies in association with the Program Director. Coordinate the repair and maintenance of CCYC vehicles. Assist Program Director and Program Development Coordinator as advised. General Administration: Work within the established program budget in association with the Program Director. Perform field site visits and complete reports with necessary documentation. Coordinate with land management agencies on field visits and work expectations. Collect, review, report and file crew field paperwork and project accomplishments. Meet regularly with other CCYC staff. Field Support and Risk Management: Provide support, evaluation and guidance to Crew Leaders and Field Boss during field visits and de-briefs. Enforce all organizational Policies and Procedures in the field and at Basecamp. Manage project quality by providing technical assistance to crews as needed. Coordinate and respond to crew emergency situations.
Qualifications: Experience with other youth conservation corps, or outdoor-based youth development programs, required. Experience in all or most of the following is required: trail construction & maintenance, chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing, rafting, running backcountry crews. Experience facilitating technical trainings, required. Good organizational, managerial and problem-solving skills, required. Excellent communication and teaching/mentoring skills, required. Strong conflict resolution and team building skills, required. Able to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team environment, required. Clean driving record (insurable), and current driver’s license, required. Positive attitude and ability to have fun with young adults, required. Current CPR & WFA certification, preferred.
