- Research Technician I - Genetics R&D OVERVIEW: Enviroflight's mission is to develop technology that produces sustainable and safe animal feed ingredients using the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens). Our technology enables the mass rearing of insect larvae, feedstock conditioning and mixing, insect life support systems, nutrients recovery, animal feed production, and cold press oil extraction and refining. JOB SUMMARY: The R&D Technician I carries out research work, manual labor, and laboratory responsibilities in the below tasks relating to the testing and development of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, rearing technologies, as directed by Enviroflight supervisor and senior management. Assists EnviroFlight Scientists in all types of laboratory testing. Working hours to include variable shifts, including weekend work. The position is offered in Apex, NC. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Time Allocation: 50% research, 35% colony maintenance, 15% laboratory maintenance and housekeeping. Research: Follow developed research protocols to produce accurate and reproducible results Operate scientific equipment in lab and non-lab environments Record and collect data using written and computerized systems Prepare reagents and solutions required for sample processing Monitor and maintain data collection, entry, organization, and research supply inventory Perform other duties as needed, including occasional travel Communicate research needs and results with appropriate personnel or senior management Colony Maintenance: Feed, rear, and harvest BSF larvae Collect and handle and transferring live or dead larvae and flies and related frass (e.g. BSF eggs, larvae and adult flies) Laboratory Maintenance and Housekeeping: Perform lab workflow functions Assist animal technicians and other research staff, as needed Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and facilities, including washing and sanitizing equipment and other janitorial duties in laboratory space, as required EnviroFlight LLC is an equal opportunity employer and gives consideration to qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or, protected veteran status. - MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS) or equivalent from a four-year accredited college/university or technical school in entomology, biology, animal science or related field. Computer skills required: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), statistical and graphical software. Must have a valid U.S. driver's license. ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT: Enviroflight will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening; no sponsorship will be provided. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated record of successfully conducting activities in a labor-intensive workspace (i.e. laboratory organization, maintenance, and management) Ability to organize and run multiple trials or procedures at one time Demonstrated strong problem solving and analytical skills to contribute to the company culture of continuous innovation and growth while maintaining consistent product quality standards Able to manage multiple priorities and work independently, in areas requiring both manual labor and administrative record keeping Flexible and adaptive to a changing workload from week to week Ability to maintain accuracy, thoroughness and reliability in record-keeping with a demonstrated understanding of required documentation, competence in basic math skills and handwriting technique Ability to consistently and legibly enter data into manual recordkeeping documents and/or into computerized production systems and software Ability to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors and management in the company and approved customers visiting or contacting the company for production information Respect for diversity and inclusivity and an ability to work with diverse teammates, customers, individuals and organizations Demonstrated record of safety, productivity, work ethics, and innovation Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality about the company and its proprietary processes and information; a Confidentiality Agreement is required. The employee must occasionally lift and /or move using equipment up to 50 pounds Additional remarks regarding work environment: All employees must be willing and able to work indoors and outdoors around the insects used in production, to be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, unpleasant odors, and mechanical equipment used for production. Hard hats, safety shoes, rubber or latex gloves, and other protective equipment must be worn as required.
