This position supervises 6 Aquatic Biologists within Region IV to administer a comprehensive regional aquatic resource program that includes management and research projects and a public relations program designed to effectively manage, enhance, protect, and utilize the Commonwealth’s fishery and aquatic resources in a multi-county region in Virginia.
This position requires considerable knowledge of fisheries or aquatic wildlife management principles and practices allowing independent completion of projects and new or unusual fisheries management assignments. Incumbent will have working knowledge of research statistics and methods, clientele served, and public relations techniques. Incumbent will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Will have ability to develop and implement fisheries research/studies and to lead, manage the work of, and supervise other technical and support staff. Demonstrated ability to conduct and communicate reviews of regulatory permit applications, environmental impact statements, and environmental assessments for projects that may impact aquatic resources. Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate scientific based fish/fishing regulations. Skill in using a PC with MSOffice or similar software. Ability to prepare and track annual budgets, to maintain an asset inventory, and to help implement and follow purchasing and accounting policies and procedures.
High school diploma or GED along with considerable experience in aquatic conservation and management required.
College degree in fisheries or aquatic wildlife management or in a related field with strong academic background in aquatic wildlife of fisheries biology preferred. Conflict resolution and management skills are preferred. Certification as a fisheries/aquatic biologist by the American Fisheries, Wildlife, or other Society, is a plus.
