The Southern Region of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is seeking an experienced biologist to join our South Atlantic Conservation Team. We seek a highly-motivated, self-starting, collaborative individual to work as a key member of a team of biologists, engineers and land protection professionals that are based out of Hanahan, South Carolina. The successful applicant will assist with implementing conservation projects on private and public lands and will have a primary focus on implementing and increasing project delivery in Florida. The responsibility of the position will primarily be the protection, enhancement and restoration of wetlands and associated habitats important to waterfowl and other wetland dependent wildlife species.
This position location will be determined based on the candidate selection. The position will report to the Director of Conservation Programs in the DU South Atlantic Field Office in Hanahan, South Carolina.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field; an advanced degree is desired. Applicants must also have at least five years of relevant experience and have a strong knowledge of biological principles and practices. Field experience with waterfowl and other wetland dependent birds, as well as wetland ecology and management (moist-soil, coastal marsh, forested wetlands) is a primary consideration for this position. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Proven proposal/grant writing skills and project management capabilities are necessary. Familiarity with the region’s biological resources, local and regional environmental issues, and private and public stakeholders is beneficial. Applicants should be knowledgeable about state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies, and laws/regulations. Examples include (but are not limited to) the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, National Coastal Wetlands Grants, Restore Act, National Environmental Policy Act, National Historic Preservation Act and Clean Water Act.
Duties and Responsibilities: The ideal candidate will be a self-starter adept at identifying opportunities focused on enhancement, restoration, acquisition and protection of wetlands and associated habitats to fulfill DU’s conservation objectives within the South Atlantic. The incumbent biologist will be responsible for project development and management. Project development duties include identifying potential projects, developing/maintaining relationships with public and private partners, and obtaining funding from a wide variety of sources for project work. This also includes writing and submitting proposals to various agencies, foundations and other funding sources to secure project funds. Project management responsibilities include development of agreements, project accounting, planning, permitting, implementation and reporting in collaboration and coordination with agency partners and other stakeholder groups, DU biological and engineering staff, consultants and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and on-budget delivery of projects. He/she must also assist with fundraising and outreach events, represent DU at wetland conservation venues, and help with other conservation activities. He/she would be required to establish and maintain relationships with key DU volunteers and fundraising staff and provide DU management with timely communication on project work/issues. Finally, he/she would assist communication staff with developing information to educate and promote DU’s wetland conservation efforts. Working hours for this position is a balance of office and field work and the approximate allocation of time is dependent on scheduling, seasonal priorities and other factors.
