Description
The incumbent of this position must reside in one of the following Virginia counties: Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Craig, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise or Wythe. Incumbent would receive up to a maximum reimbursement of $11,000 for eligible moving and relocation expenses in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia Moving and Relocation Regulations issued by the Office of the Comptroller." Incumber will receive a $7.500 sign- on bonus with a 12- month tenure agreement. Position supervises 3 District Wildlife Biologists to administer a comprehensive wildlife program including management of wildlife populations, wildlife habitats, and human-wildlife conflicts as well as outreach and research within one of the Department’s operational regions. Additionally, position supervises the statewide elk biologist and elk conservations program ensuring viability and sustainability of elk within the Commonwealth. Position supports additional statewide wildlife conservation programs by providing regional expertise to Department colleagues in the development of species management plans and wildlife regulations. Incumbent will be required to travel to the DWR Regional Office located in Marion, Virginia, on a weekly basis, as well as travel to one or more of the Virginia counties listed above approximately 40% of their scheduled time. Incumbent will be required to travel to DWR Headquarters located in Henrico, Virginia, approximately4 – 6 times per year, which may require some overnight travel.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge and understanding of the management principles and practices for terrestrial wildlife species and habitats. Demonstrated experience and technical expertise in managing populations and habitats for a diverse suite of wildlife species. Exhibited skills in leadership and personnel management displaying an ability to supervise others is required. Experience in constructively interacting with various state and federal fish and wildlife agencies and the public to achieve shared conservation goals. Demonstrated experience in solving and/or recommending solutions to difficult or unusual problems is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills. The ability to use personal computers and Microsoft Office are required. High school diploma or GED along with considerable experience in wildlife conservation and management required. Possession of, or eligibility for, a valid VA driver’s license required. Preferred Qualifications Advanced college degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Natural Resources or related field. Experience in constructively interacting with various state and federal fish and wildlife agencies and the public to achieve shared conservation goals. Demonstrated natural resource conservation or wildlife management experience with solving and/or recommending solutions to difficult or unusual problems. Conflict resolution and management skills are preferred. Certification by The Wildlife Society or other related professional organization is desirable.
