- TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Seasonal, 40 hours/week, maximum 24 weeks. Starting date: April 24th, 2023 OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Palisades Region is hiring three PRA 4’s/Regional Wildlife Technicians to work closely with the OPRHP Regional Stewardship Specialist, Park Forest Rangers, Park Managers, and Natural Resource Management staff and meet regional and statewide stewardship goals. The duties of the Wildlife Technician will focus largely on black bear management, providing education and outreach to park patrons, primarily surrounding topics such as wildlife issues and food storage compliance protocols. The technicians will work with a goal of reducing human-wildlife conflicts by detecting and mitigating the availability of human food in campgrounds, picnic areas, parking lots and other park areas. Patrols will be performed in close coordination with Park management and camp staff in high-use/ high wildlife conflict areas. Additional duties include assisting with nuisance bear report collection and entry, ensuring bear proof dumpsters are secured properly throughout the park, performing aversive conditioning techniques, and periodically monitoring backcountry shelter hiker logs for bear reports/ sightings. This is a temporary position within the Natural Resource Management Department. As such, acceptance of this position could result in end-of-season termination of employment since any incumbent must be subject to the same terms of a new seasonal employee. - OPERATIONAL NEEDS: • Support regional Stewardship staff in wildlife related matters • Collect, record, enter and manage field data • Organize and participate in education and outreach events • Conduct trainings for regional staff • Periodically assist in hazing Canada Geese at/near public swimming beaches when needed. • Employees will be on a rotating shift and will be scheduled to work Thursday-Monday 1:30 PM-10:00 PM or Monday-Friday 7:30 AM-4:00PM. Flexibility in hours is a must as changes to work schedule may occur. • Must possess a valid driver’s license • Must have excellent organizational skills in field setting • Must have excellent communication skills • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other basic computer skills • Must have an ability to work and maintain a good attitude while performing job duties and interacting with park patrons • Must have a strong interest in, and commitment to environmental stewardship as well as a team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: • Prior education or experience in Wildlife Management or similar field • Backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace experience is a plus
