- Description of Duties and Responsibilities: 50% - Participating or leading the development and implementation of stock assessment models for marine fisheries stocks in the southeastern US. Prepare stock assessments and special reports for Florida' s marine resource managers. Provide and interpret fisheries information from a state and regional basis for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other management agencies. Prepare reports and manuscripts of findings of the above analyses. Reviews and evaluates reports, proposals, and manuscripts pertaining to marine fisheries. Assist in the development and preparation of stock assessment analyses for interstate fisheries agencies ( Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Comm. and Gulf States Marine Fisheries Comm) and federal fisheries agencies (Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and South Atlantic Fishery Management Council) contiguous to Florida. 35% - Participate and direct the design and testing of multi species models or system models for marine fisheries using data from fishery monitoring programs, ecological and habitat surveys, physical environment monitoring, and human behavioral surveys. Monitor the status of selected marine fisheries to determine how well Florida' s management goals are being met. Independently design and test new mathematical techniques to accomplish the above duties. Keep current on relevant literature. 10% - Assist in the design and coordination of monitoring and surveys of Florida fisheries resources. Assist with the design and testing of sampling techniques for fisheries programs Statistically validate and recommend appropriate changes to all fisheries data collection programs used by the Institute. 5% - Promote and participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate. Assist in other Institute activities as requested. Performs related work as required. Participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate.
- Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and five years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years of professional experience as described above; or a doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and two years of professional experience as described above. **Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge and professional experience with quantitative fisheries stock assessment methods, statistical analysis and project design; strong project management experience. Knowledge of terminology, principles and application of techniques used in scientific research, analysis and testing, numerical modeling, statistical methods, biology, life history and fisheries pertaining to marine fish and invertebrate species within the Southeastern US waters; strong knowledge of fisheries stock assessment models, including the principles, practices and procedures used in single species and/or ecosystem models; Skill in written and verbal communications and in the use of personal computers and associated software. Skill in population model construction, experimental design, testing of hypotheses, computer programming, written and verbal communications and in the use of personal computers and associated software Ability to manage and/or participate in multiple research projects effectively; plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; supervise others effectively; work independently; utilize problem-solving techniques; and understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; travel and work hours in excess of 40 per week, nights and weekends. Ability to maintain valid drivers license.
